Web Applications

This was the last lessons and it was about the web and applications.
A web application is an application that is accessed by users over a network such as the Internet or an intranet The term may also mean a computer software application that is coded in a browser-supported programming language (such as JavaScript, combined with a browser-rendered markup language like HTML) and reliant on a common web browser to render the application executable.
Web applications are popular due to the ubiquity of web browsers, and the convenience of using a web browser as a client, sometimes called a thin client. The ability to update and maintain web applications without distributing and installing software on potentially thousands of client computers is a key reason for their popularity, as is the inherent support for cross-platform compatibility. Common web applications include webmail, online retail sales, online auctions, wikis and many other functions.

Internet domain suffix:

Anything not ending with these suffixes is definitely outside the
US.  Some of these, like .com, .org and .net, may be.  Knowing
where you are is the key to knowing how much to trust the information.

–AC - Academic (same as .edu)
–CO - Commercial (same as .com)
–COM - Commercial
–EDU - Educational Site in the U.S.
–GOV – U.S. Government
–INT - International
–MIL – U.S. Military
–NET - Network
–ORG - Non-Profit Organization
–ARPA – Research Organization
–NATO – North Atlantic Treaty Organization

Search engines:
search engine are a sort of web applications that are characterized by:

Enables users to search the Web

Uses keywords to find information

Modern version of a library “card catalog”

Features usually include:

Ranking of pages by how well they matched keywords

Suggestion of possible alternate search terms

Option to find similar pages

Results are often affected by sponsored advertising

Google, YAHOO, bing,,,, are examples of search engines that are famous. Some countries like china have their own search engines.

Wiki.

•One of the most outstanding web-based application been developed and improved during the last decade.

•A user is capable to create a comprehensive knowledge base or an interactive website on any personal, corporate or social topic, and share it with the user's community.

•The wiki engine enables each member to search, read, add and edit articles, and thus improve the content of the wiki.

•Wiki software can be downloaded as a ready-made tool and in the majority of cases its use is free of charge.

E-Business.
E-business is the term to describe the information systems and applications that support and drive business processes, most often using the World Wide Web. E-business allows companies to link the internal and external processes more efficiently and effectively, and work more closely with suppliers and partners to better satisfy the needs and expectations of their customers. With e-business you can communicate across the country with customers, or simply using email to broadcast product news and information.

Examples of business-to-business exhibitions are those in the areas of health care, computer products, electronics, advertising specialties, heavy equipment, agriculture, fashions, furniture, and toys.
We also studied about E-commerce, online shopping, E-banking, web2.0, and web 1.0 and the difference and features of each of them. The lecturer explains clearly and particularly about this terms supported with example from our daily life.

By this post I end reflecting in all what I have learned about in the computer and Internet course, even though it seemed very general and simple, but I admit that I have learned new things and enjoyed.
Finally, I would like to thank my lecturer Mr.Azamuddin Abdul Rahman  for his hard work and effort to make the information available and understandable for us all.

Internet

This lesson was more important for me to understand deeper about some particular subjects about the global network. In general the internet defined as a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to serve several billion users worldwide. It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic, business, and government networks, of local to global scope, that are linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless and optical networking technologies.

The Internet carries an extensive range of information resources and services, such as the inter-linked hypertext documents of the World Wide Web (WWW), the infrastructure to support email, and peer-to-peer networks.
Most traditional communications media including telephone, music, film, and television are being reshaped or redefined by the Internet, giving birth to new services such as voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and Internet Protocol television (IPTV). Newspaper, book and other print publishing are adapting to website technology, or are reshaped into blogging and web feeds. The Internet has enabled and accelerated new forms of human interactions through instant messaging, Internet forums, and social networking. Online shopping has boomed both for major retail outlets and small artisans and traders. Business-to-business and financial services on the Internet affect supply chains across entire industries.

The Internet, referring to the specific global system of interconnected IP networks, is a proper noun and written with an initial capital letter. In the media and common use it is often not capitalized, viz. the internet. Some guides specify that the word should be capitalized when used as a noun, but not capitalized when used as a verb or an adjective. The Internet is also often referred to as the Net.

The internet layer or IP layer is a group of internet working methods, protocols, and specifications in the Internet protocol suite that are used to transport data grams (packets) from the originating host across network boundaries, if necessary, to the destination host specified by a network address (IP address) which is defined for this purpose by the Internet Protocol (IP). The internet layer derives its name from its function of forming an internet (uncapitalized), or facilitating internet working, which is the concept of connecting multiple networks with each other through gateways.
Internet-layer protocols use IP-based packets. The internet layer does not include the protocols that define communication between local (on-link) network nodes which fulfill the purpose of maintaining link states between the local nodes, such as the local network topology, and that usually use protocols that are based on the framing of packets specific to the link types. Such protocols belong to the link layer.

What is Hypertext Markup Language (HTML)
The public files on the web servers are ordinary text files, much like the files used by word-processing software and allows web browser software to read them and the text must be formatted according to a generally accepted standard.

What is Web?
The web consists of information organized into Web pages containing text and graphic images. It contains hypertext links or highlighted keywords and images that lead to related information. And then the collection of linked Web pages that has a common theme or focus is called a Web site.

What is the World Wide Web?
It is originally to aid researchers find information through a linked test. It used HTTP for protocol and HTML for content of pages and it doesn't still have images at this point.

Do you know what the internet network is?
It is linked networks that work much the same way, they pass data around in packets, each of which carriers the addresses of its sender and receiver.

How the internet works?
Firstly, transport control protocol that operates at the transport layer and used in combination with IP by most internet applications. Secondly, backbone it is an internet high-speed, long-distance communications links and thirdly uniform resource locator (URL) it is assigned address on the internet for each computer.

Do you know how to access the internet?
In the school and business is direct accessing the internet through the organization’s local area networks (LAN) or through their own personal computers and another way to access the internet is through Internet Service Provider (ISP).

The type of internet connection
  1.      LAN servers
  2.        Serial line internet protocol (SLIP) and Point-to-point protocol (PPP)
  3.       Connection via an on-line service provider (ISP)

Internet Browser

is a software application for retrieving, presenting and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web. An information resource is identified by a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) and may be a web page, image, video or other piece of content. Hyperlinks present in resources enable users easily to navigate their browsers to related resources. Although browsers are primarily intended to use the World Wide Web, they can also be used to access information provided by web servers in private networks or files in file systems. The major web browsers are Google Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, and Safari.

Microsoft powerpoint

Microsoft power point is very useful for my presentation, if we make perfect PowerPoint slide, firstly we have to create one new slide and insert any text and use themes or background to become more attractive. And then, you can put a picture on the slide; it can be inserted from your file or you can use insert clip art and make screenshots in your slide. Secondly, you can apply transition all of your slides to get professional look, add sound and then you can put word art to create stylized text with effects such as shadows, textures and more; the another one is insert a shapes such as rectangles, circles, lines and so on. Thirdly, if you want to make a video with power point, you insert one audio; format and apply it all of the slide and record the time for one slide how many minutes you want to show? And then, you can put a video on your PowerPoint to get more attention and attached the knowledge to your audience by effectively.

PowerPoint presentations consist of a number of individual pages or "slides". The "slide" analogy is a reference to the slide projector. A better analogy would be the "foils" (or transparencies/plastic sheets) that are shown with an overhead projector, although they are in decline now. Slides may contain text, graphics, sound, movies, and other objects, which may be arranged freely. The presentation can be printed, displayed live on a computer, or navigated through at the command of the presenter. For larger audiences the computer display is often projected using a video projector. Slides can also form the basis of webcasts.

Theme

PowerPoint provides three types of movements:
  1. Entrance, emphasis, and exit of elements on a slide itself are controlled by what PowerPoint calls Custom Animations.
  2. Transitions, on the other hand, are movements between slides. These can be animated in a variety of ways.
  3. Custom animation can be used to create small story boards by animating pictures to enter, exit or move.

We can use transition to make our presentation more attractive.

Smart Art allows you to visually communicate information rather than simply using normal text.

Microsoft office excell

This program is one of the important software for office, as it serves to solve the problems that involve numbers. In the basic step of Microsoft Excel, firstly, I learnt about basic cells that cell content use to calculate, analyze and organize data. You can select and delete cells, insert content and cell content and also copy, cut, paste, drag, drop and fill cell using the fill handle. And then, you can modify and format columns, rows and cell. Secondly, you can create simple and complex formulas and working with basic functions, sorting, outlining, filtering data and formatting tables and finally you can save and print the worksheet.

Microsoft Excel has the basic features of all spreadsheets, using a grid of cells arranged in numbered rows and letter-named columns to organize data manipulations like arithmetic operations. It has a battery of supplied functions to answer statistical, engineering and financial needs. In addition, it can display data as line graphs, histograms and charts, and with a very limited three-dimensional graphical display. It allows sectioning of data to view its dependencies on various factors for different perspectives (using pivot tables and the scenario manager

In advanced session, you need to use Sparkline; that is miniature charts that fir into a single cell and place a large number of them in your worksheets. It has three types of Sparkline such as line, columns and win/lose line. And then, Pivot Tables that makes the data in worksheets much more manageable by summarizing the data and allowing user to manipulate in different ways. The one is working with chart and track changes. All of these features are allowed to organize data, complete calculations, make decision, graph data and develop report.

Advanced microsoft word include the three structured which are working with styles and templates, customizing tables and creating charts, and creating mail merge documents. We learn how to put style and themes that would create professional looking documents. A style is a combination of font style, colour and size of text that can be applied to selected text.

Hyperlinks allow us to navigate from one web page to another. The basic parts of hyperlink are the address of the web page, email address or other location that they are linking to and the display text.

Windows OS

This week we learned more about the characteristics and features of Windows Operating System such:
Microsoft created the operating system, Windows, in the mid-1980s.
They have a version of the operating system that is designed for the home user, and a professional version, which is intended for businesses.
The versions differ in the depth of networking, security, and multimedia support.
Windows is a proprietary software, which means that Microsoft has placed restrictions on how people can use or copy the software.
Windows comes preloaded on most of the PCs sold today, and can also be purchased separately
